Your dream was to open a shelter.. but life took another turn. And now your boys Hank and Sherman – are the inspiration for your boutique. Tell us about Nermington’s.

Before Nermington’s it was my dream, and still is, to open a pet sanctuary/shelter for pets who were “unadoptable” or at risk of being euthanized. Because I was unable to make that happen at the time, I started thinking about other ways to fulfill my dream. and so, Nermington’s was born.

Tell us about Hank and his love for bandanas.

We adopted Hank from the Asheville Humane Society about 4 years ago and the moment my husband met Hank, they were connected. Hank loves me but he is over the moon with my husband. Hank was found on the Blue Ridge Parkway so he is the rugged outdoorsman type with now a little spoiled side. We instantly became those dog parents that were overly obsessed with their dogs. Hank’s bandana collection grew rapidly.

and for Sherman… he’s a dog who helps with anxiety?

Unofficially, but yes! Sherman and I had an immediate connection because we adopted him off craigslist when he was 4 1/s weeks old. At the time I got him, I was just starting my sobriety and was in a deep depression and anxiety. I thought that I was saving him, but in reality, he saved me. when I feel sad or feeling anxious or depressed feelings, I just go over and snuggle him on his bed and there are times when I don’t realize my emotions and he is immediately getting in my computer chair.

You are pretty handy with a sewing machine – your grandmother was a seamstress – so you started hand-making these pet products. Tell us about that.

Well to be honest, I didn’t have an interest in it when my grandmother was teaching me but she made it fun so I listened. It wasn’t until I had a client that owned a quilt shop called 5 little Monkeys in Asheville, NC from my social media management business that I rekindled that interest in sewing.

You make these shirt and bandanna combos – your sales all happen online and you’ve also got treats – tell us about those.

We have always loved Bocce’s Bakery Treats. Bocce’s was founded by two sisters, inspired by their dog, Bocce, they have clean transparent ingredients, and they support small businesses. I knew I wanted to have a little something extra for my customers and when I found out that Bocce’s had a wholesale program I knew they had to be on our site.

A portion of your sales is donated to partners like Greenville Humane Society and others – Is anything else you want people to know about Nermington’s or your plans for the future?

Yes! We are thrilled to give 5% of each sale to our partners (Greenville Humane and Stanly County Animal Protective Services). Our mission is what we want to be known for.  As for the future, we have a lot of exciting plans that I don't want to give away yet but it’s going to be great for both humans and pets!
