The Importance of Walking and Training Your Dog

Welcome to January, the month dedicated to our furry friends! As we step into the New Year, let's celebrate the significance of Walk Your Dog Month and Train Your Dog Month. It's the perfect time to prioritize the health and happiness of our beloved canine companions. In this blog post, we'll explore the benefits of regular dog walks and the importance of training for their mental stimulation. Get ready to embark on a journey that will strengthen the bond between you and your furry friend!

The Health Benefits of Regular Dog Walks

Just like us, dogs need regular exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Daily walks offer numerous benefits, both physical and mental. Here's why it's crucial to make walking a part of your dog's routine:

1. Physical Exercise: Walking provides an opportunity for your dog to burn off excess energy, maintain a healthy weight, and improve cardiovascular health.

2. Mental Stimulation and Stress Relief: Dogs are naturally curious creatures. Exploring new sights, sounds, and scents during walks stimulates their minds and alleviates stress, leading to a calmer and happier pup.

3. Stronger Bond Between Dog and Owner: Going for walks together strengthens the bond between you and your furry friend. It's a chance for quality time, shared experiences, and mutual appreciation.

We take our boys, Hank & Sherman on at least 3 walks a day. They are both 75ish lbs and without training them both, we would be pulled the whole time. Taking the time to train them both on how to walk with manners has been a game changer for us. Dog Training Elite was a huge help in improving our walks!

The Importance of Training for a Dog's Mental Stimulation

Training is not just about teaching your dog basic commands; it's a vital aspect of their overall mental well-being. Here are a few reasons why training is essential:

1. Basic Obedience Training: Teaching your dog commands like sit, stay, and come ensures their safety and facilitates better communication between you and your pet.

2. Problem-Solving Skills: Training encourages mental agility and problem-solving abilities in dogs. It challenges their minds and keeps them engaged, preventing boredom and destructive behavior.

3. Preventing Behavioral Issues: A well-trained dog is less likely to develop behavioral problems. Training establishes boundaries, reinforces positive behaviors, and helps your dog become a well-adjusted member of your family and community.

Sherman has come a long way thanks to Dog Training Elite Upstate! We are able to take him downtown and interact with other dogs, and we can successfully communicate with him. Teaching him manners (no jumping, no pulling, etc.) has given him the confidence in the elements!

Tips for Successful Dog Walking and Training

Now that we understand the importance of walking and training, let's explore some tips for making your dog's walking and training experiences enjoyable and effective:

1. Establishing a Routine: Dogs thrive on routine, so set a consistent schedule for walks and training sessions. This helps them anticipate and look forward to these activities.

2. Positive Reinforcement Techniques: Use treats, praise, and rewards to reinforce desired behaviors during walks and training. Positive reinforcement creates a positive association and motivates your dog to continue learning.

3. Socializing with Other Dogs and People: Encourage interactions with other dogs and people during walks to improve your dog's social skills. This boosts their confidence and enhances their ability to behave calmly in different situations.

Socializing Sherman was a huge goal for us. I wanted him to be confident and feel safe when we were around other dogs. Dog Training Elite Upstate helped us understand how to ease his nerves and be more comfortable around new friends. Now Sherman has a crew of pup friends and was on TV!

Making Dog Walking and Training Fun and Engaging

Keeping your dog engaged and excited during walks and training sessions is key to their enjoyment and progress. Here are a few suggestions to make it a positive experience for both of you:

1. Incorporating Games and Challenges: Turn walks into fun adventures by adding games like hide-and-seek or fetch. This stimulates your dog's mind and makes the walk more engaging.

2. Using Training Treats and Toys: Utilize training treats and interactive toys as rewards during training. This adds an element of excitement and motivation for your dog to learn and perform well.

3. Creating a Positive and Rewarding Experience: Shower your dog with love, praise, and affection during and after walks and training. This reinforces their good behavior and strengthens your bond.

Both our boys are very food-motivated so we incorporate food toys to help keep their minds stimulated. We also do training homework that Dog Training Elite taught us to also work their minds and to continue to sharpen their manners.

From a Professional

Happy Walk & Train Your Dog Month! As we all move into the New Year, some of you may have added new furry family members to your squad, or maybe you already have a beloved furry family member that you would like some tips for to improve your walking and obedience skills.

First, you will want to determine what reward your dog will work for: treats, toys, verbal praise or a combination. You'll also want to research training tools and select those that are right for you. When teaching a new skill, or even practicing an older one, it's always a good idea to start in the least distracting environment. This helps ensure the dog's focus remains on the handler.

Once your dog has gained enough understanding and consistency with the skill you are teaching, you can then begin to slowly layer on distractions. Since it is Walk & Train Your Dog Month, let's use the example of dogs that become overstimulated, and fixate on other dogs or animals while on walks.

When practicing, it will be important to find an area where another dog or animal may be, but not necessarily many dogs or other animals. In these instances, you'll want to use the Heel command. Heel is a positional command, which can be used while you are in motion or standing still, and is also a job or task for your dog to focus on while maintaining the leash loose.

This is a very useful command when teaching your dog leash manners. If you've ever been yanked, dragged, pulled over, or lost the leash due to your dog's poor leash manners, then this is something you'll definitely want to begin working on!

And don't be afraid of the saying "You can't teach an old dog new tricks"… it is a myth! Focus more on the "Better late than never" saying. Happy walking and training to you all!
